GOING TO PARIS FOR THE FIRST TIME

I wish I could listen or read these things that I am going to share with you before my first trip to Paris, or the second or third! They are not the usual: places, restaurants or what to bring.

Many people think that Paris is an overrated city, because well… almost all the people that go to Paris say it is so so so beautiful, and even those people who go to Paris with this first prejudice can’t deny the beauty and charm of Paris and the heart smiles that the city takes from them, I have seen them with my own eyes :) So I am going to share with you a few different recommendations to travel to Paris and enjoy it in a more... Parisian way.

After some trips to Paris I can say that the most important thing that you have to know about this city is that you can’t control it, yes, that, I mean, you can have the perfect trip plan scheduled by hours, places, restaurants, museums, etc, but, believe me, if you do that perfect schedule you will not enjoy Paris, not in the proper way, the french way. This is the city of love! It is not called that way because of nothing, no, it is the city of feelings, the city where you can connect with your heart and the heart of others. Of course you can have a list of plans to do, the longer the better, haha, so, then let it go, every morning and every afternoon, let it go, feel the city, feel what it is calling you to do, a morning stroll in Les Îles? Or a cafe afternoon reading a book, writing or just watching people pass? Going to a fancy Afternoon Tea? Seeing the lights on the Pont Alexandre III? Oh my god, you wouldn’t believe, there are infinite things to do in Paris. Is this crazy for you? well, if you want to have a really Parisian experience you have to embrace craziness. Please let the improvisation flow all the time, I swear you will not regret it.

The Eiffel tower. Don’t pretend you are an impossible francophile or an old Parisian that hates the Eiffel tower, even Parisians love the Eiffel tower, specially the younger, you can see them lying in the grass just chilling. So go to see this lady whenever you can, I have been in Trocadero at every possible hour, 7 am, mid day, evening, night. The most beautiful hours for me are the early morning, specially if the sun is coming out, it makes the light flow so ethereal through the tower, and you can see this place without the crowds, it is really worth it to get up that early. And in the evening, when the lights are going on, you.can't.miss.this, the right moment when the tower is in darkness and the lights go on; I remember the first time I saw this, it was one of the most magical moments of my life, it seems like I am a hopeless romantic, anyway. And if you are a lover of the aerial views, like me, go up the tower, the line is not that long as everybody says, the Seine and the ponts look unreal, they look as if they were the most perfect maquette.

Have a day alone for yourself in Paris and go for a long walk with no direction. get lost in the streets of Paris; do you know what is the favourite thing to do for Parisians? it isn't having sex, or falling in love, or drinking wine, it is walking through the Parisian streets. And I totally understand them, to the extent that I made a solo trip to Paris. Paris is an existentialist city, it is the mother of existentialism, it is the mother of the most breathtaking writers. Walking alone through the streets of Paris is an existentialist experience, to think, but not in the way we used to think (a stressed way), you can understand things about yourself, about your loved ones, about life, you can have those serendipity moments, eureka moments and even deja-vus. I don’t know what has Paris to make you feel and think in this way, maybe is the history, the intricate architecture, the tiny streets, the stories that you breathe.

The macaroons, the pastries, the fancy restaurants, nothing of that matters compared to wine and cheese, if you can have a different bottle of wine every day, do it, and try all the cheeses you can, because there is nothing like wine and cheese in France in other places in the world, and they are fresh, selected, seasonal, you can’t find these anywhere else. About the vienosserie, well, it is also unique, I think it is because you can't find the same french milk and butter (maybe also water) to make this croissants at home, or have them in other patisseries in the world. So have croissants and baguettes of many Parisian boulangeries, then you will go to the gym.

Finally, have a picnic somewhere, or just a bottle of wine and cheese, or just wine! Enjoy the life. Paris is full of places, squares, parks to do this: Champs de Mars, les Tuileries, Place Dauphine, any romantic quai of Ile St Louis, Jardin des plantes in the spring, Jardin de Luxembourg, etc. it's the moment, Paris is about being present with yourself or your loved ones, is the place to do nothing, contemplate, speak of any non trascendental thing or super trascendental things; and stay there hours, lay down, chill, it is not about to eat an elaborate and beautiful picnic and go, no, it's about being with you, the others and the city for a long time.
